1996 Jetta exhaust

I'm buying a 96 Jetta GL and I'm told that there are two options for the center muffler.  There is an early option and a late option.  I know that the one is oval and that one is clamshell.  Does anyone know what the diagram looks like for both, because when I looked under the car I'm pretty sure that the pipe coming from the center muffler was coming towards the driver door and then went back to the second muffler, which I think is the clamshell style configuration.  I think that the oval style center muffler goes straight to the second muffler without coming towards the door.  Hope this post isn't too confusing.
 
Oh yeah.. the reason I'm asking this is because the car isn't close by to look at and I have to buy the parts for it.
