rite got a mk3 golf 19ld was wounderin wots the biggest rims i can get on with out arch work wouldnt mind 18s if they would fitt any ideas guys
p.s its a uk mk3
what size rim is on there now?

You can usually put on 18" rims if you have a stock 16 or 17" if you put on low profile tires. You actually don't take up anymore space than a stock rim and tire because on a stock tire, the side walls are tall. Low pro tires have a side wall usually an inch or more less the height so in the end it doesn't take up really any more space (it just looks bigger, that bigger rim illusion). You get into problems when you wanna go to 20" rims or more. Then you'll have rubbing, clearance and steering issues.
18" should be fine.

well i had stock 13s ive bought some 17s which are 205/40/17 there realy rare in the uk aswell only 4 sets ever imported

on an mk3 i wouldnt go any bigger than a 17, it starts to look like a hotwheels if you go any bigger

I owuld go with 17" i have an MK3 with 17"s and it just right
