Hi, my name is Katie and I have a jetta problem.

Namely, the computer won’t communicate with the diagnostic tool. The check engine light has been on for a while now, and it has been reset only to come back on again within a day or two. I have had it to three places, all with different opinions as to why. The one who took the most time said it was computer failure due to an after market radio. The radio in question from placed there by the dealership that sold it to me, and was from a 1994 radio. The guy said the radio threw too much power and killed my computer slowly and its friend. Another guy told me no way could that happen, even after I showed his the service bulletin about after market radios. He said no company would make a car with such an issue with their own radios, even if they were from the wrong year. In the meantime, my car has started to eat gas like a monster, where it never had before. The same guy who told me the radio killed my car mentioned just standing behind my car made his eyes water.
The guy who told me the radio did NOT kill my car says he checked the gas output, everything was fine. So my question is who is right? Should this other jettas radio have killed my computer? This guy who is working on my car now says NO, but he’s the one who put the radio in the car and sold it to me in the first place. I don’t know who to trust. Any help with this would be really really appreciated. I am at the end of my rope after having spent lots of money to never get a straight answer. Please email me at katewillet@gmail.com if possible

thanks folks.

SO, what your saying is, you took a stock radio from a '94 Jetta and put it in your car? I highly doubt that would have anything to do with it....I have a 2400 watt amp for my sound sytem in my 2000 Jetta with no capacitor, and I haven't gone through any alternators or batteries, yet. Unless there's a short or a wiring problem, I don't think the radio would cause any problems with your car, but I may be wrong. As far as gas mileage, fuel consumption is a number of things, fuel filter, fuel pump, any number of items that supply fuel to the engine. The ECU has a definite play with your air/fuel mixture, so if that's fried or whatever, that's a good possibilty. Start with the fuel filter, should be part of routine maintanence anyways.

i dont see the radio killing your computer at all that seems HIGHly odd to me considering that they do not make any comunication back and forth. i do know that there are some people on www.antistock.org/forums that could answer that question more fully for you
