Electrical/Ignition Problem

I have an issue with my ignition and would like some insight before taking it to the mechanic.
After I start my car and disengage the handbrake, the "brake" light is dimly lit (should be off). At the same time, my driving lights, windshield wipers, and a/c or heating vents dont work. I can push the key forward more, which causes all of the above will work and the "brake" light goes out. However, the key doesnt stay in that far position and turns back toward me. If I jiggle the key in multiple directions, after a few minutes I'll find the sweet spot where the lights and other accessories will come on. Then driving down the road, there is a high probability that the lights will go out and the "brake" light is dimly lit again. While attempting to get the lights back on I am constantly flashing my headlights at other drivers!
I think that I need a new ignition switch. However, it could also be bad wires or maybe even a shortage.
My cabrio is a 1997 2.0 highline.

Sorry to seem so ignorant.
Is this something that can be done myself or do I need a mechanic?
Where can I find the part?
