engine color

I'm doing a restoration on a 56 bug with a factory sunroof. The engine appears to be an original 36 hp with all original components. The shroud behind the generator is reddish-orange, as is the oil filler tube and the tin behind the crank pully as well as the horizontal tube that holds the plug wires. Was this original? I find it hard to to believe someone would pull the motor and take it apart to paint these components, yet I can find no reference to any other engine color than flat black.
