Fuel Filter Question

I just put a new fuel filter in my 86 diesel golf, and now its running like crap. Do I need to bleed air from ifr? If so, how do I do it, the manual I have doesn't give a clear explination.

if its running it will pull the air through it and start running better
it will run poor for a min.
