How to remove the window handle/winder in '89 Fox???

I need to remove the door panel in my 1989 VW Fox but I can't figure out how to get the handle/winder thingie that rolls the window up and down off.  When I owned my Toyota truck it had that little spring clip that was kind of shaped like a "C" that I just removed and the winder came off.  But it doesnt appear the Fox has that clip?  If it does I can't see it when look at the base of the winder.
