I've been hitting other forums but just came across this one and thought I would give it a whirl. I've had my share of VWs I guess. Started with my folks having a wagon and Beetle ('70's era) when I was just a kid to me owning an '84 Jetta GL, '83 GTI, '94 Golf CL, '95 Passat VR6 (still in the inventory with 300000 kms) and now a '96 Golf CL as a commuter. I bought the Golf yesterday for $1500 CDN from the original owner (36 year old mother), all maintenance done by a local Porsche/VW shop at regular intervals. All service records kept religiously in a file. Just an example of some new parts...deep cycle battery, complete exhaust incl. cat(6 mths ago), tires (less than 1 year), brakes in last month etc. The car is in excellent condition with just a tiny bit of surface rust around the windshield and two spots on the tailgate. The AC compressor bearing let go and the mechanic told her it would be about $600 to fix. She decided to sell instead and I happened to be the first caller. My good luck I guess. I swapped out the compressor today for a used one at a cost of $60.00. Runs great. I'll keep you posted. Please dont take this as boasting, because I think it relates, I also own a '72 Porsche 911T that I do all service on a drive as often as possible. Believe me there is most definitely a VW connection there. Air cooled greatness!!!
