I have a 1999 Mk4 Polo 1.4 8v.
I have a whining noise coming from my engine when i pull away. The noise gets louder as the reves rise until about 3k in which it is a constant whine.
I think it may be something to do with the alternator but not sure, i have driven others the same and they do not do it.
Can someone advise me!!! I need some help

if the noise is only there when you pull away or when moving it is more likely to be connected to gearbox or clutch

If the noise is a wining sound which is directely related to the engine speed, you might have the same problem I'm having. My Auxilary drive belt tensioner, the one which runs the alternator and power steering pump is failing. I have another unit at 40 quid but I have yet to find a way to access the back of the unit to remove it. I've posted several questions on various websites without success. Although I have found amost every single way possible to make your VW look like an airfix kit on big wheels. Helpfull.
Any suggestions weoul be appreciated.

hi my polo has got the same problem and if i were you i would not drive it get it look at, my polo started of with a whining noise then all of a sudden in the night was driving home and the gearbox was failing and it was a pretty bad experience my car is in the vw garage now gettin repaired but if i were u either wait till mines out and i will reply agen sayin what actualy is the problem or take it to a garage to get it look at before u end up like me payin out a wad of cash chrisxx
