Hello ,
My car is a VW Passat 2001 Saloon sports rim
I've just recived the following report for my VW service "Both Outer cv boots split -£322".
Can some one please tell what cv boots are? Will it be dangerous if i dont' fix it and this a price normal ?
Thanks for your help and this is a really informative site

CV boots are the rubber bellows that mount over the Constant Velocity joints at either end of the drive axle. The problem is when they split, the grease that keeps the CV joint lubricated, will come out and allow the joint to run dry. If not taken care of soon enough, the cv joint will be ruined, at which point you replace the affected joint or the entire drive shaft. It's much cheaper to replace a split boot than the whole axle.
Normal price? Cannot answer that, since I'm not sure of the exchange rate.

Just replaced both of mine. VW wanted about $600 each to do the work. Many of you cringe when I say this, but I bought the axles at Napa, about $180 for both, life time warrenty. Took about 4 hours to do the work, and I had absolutley no idea what I was doing. I had a local garage replace one of the boots when tires were put on the car. The boot came off before I got home.
