Hi
i have just bought my son a vw golf mk4 gt tdi pd 115bhp its a x 2000 model the problem i have is that the heater blows hot and cold when hot the temp gauge is fine when blowing cold air temp gauge goes up towards the red you then get warning telling u 2 stop and car holds back u ease off tepmp gauge comes straight back down u can then drive normal. i have had a check done on header tank to c if head gasket is gone and they say that is ok i have been told possible air in system so i have left the cap off header tank as ive been told this is way to bleed the system that hasnt worked either please help.

Did you leave the car running when you bled the system?

Ok here's what I would do...as Jsd said, let the car run with the cap off until you see some radiator fluid start to surface through the overflow and shut the car off. Next a sure fire way to see if a headgasket is blown is to do a compression test on your cylinders; (ex: you have 3 cylinders and all 3 cylinders read 100psi, but one cylinder reads 40, or 60 or even 70 or 80) you have a bad headgasket. Is the car smoking when you drive? Is the radiator cracked, or has a small hole or anything that would make it leak? Is ther enough fluid in there? Check the whole sys, make sure everything works as advertised, and get back to me..
