purchasing an 87 cabrio wolfsburg edition

hey guys,
i was thinking about buying a friend's vw. it is an 87 cabrio wolfsburg edition. i am a car/truck guys, but know nothing about these cars. i know it is a 4banger, front wheel drive, m/t, ragtop. 187,000 miles.
if anyone has any info about these cars such as common/typical problems. motor specs, aftermarket support.
im not looking for any big upgrades, just maybe shocks/struts, cold air, clutches, etc.
