I replaced my thermostat in my 99 jetta 2.0 new body style, car runs till it heats up then shuts down, check engine light comes on but reset when the temp guage cools down, so I replaced the water pump and timing belt this pass weekend, not that bad of a job, replaced the thermostat and housing again no leaks car runs fine but still shuts down at 190 degrees, put a new temp sensor in it today still shuts down. this is driving me crazy has anyone every had this happen I tried to blled the system but that doesen't seem to work either,  also the hose from the bottom of the radiator to the thermostat housing never warms up. I thought maybe i had a block in the radiator but I removed th upper and lower hoses and ran water through them and got good flow. Thanks for the help.

is your thermostat installed correctly??  so if your lower hose is not warming up then somewhere there's a block....do you have heat?  If not flush your heater core

Had the same issue.  Check the water pump.
