My 1987 Jetta was driving fine until yesterday when the clutch pedal went to the floor accompanied by a violent snapping sound. Well, I was going from 1st to 2nd and the clutch reengaged before I could get it out of 1st so it was pretty rough with my speed up and the engine revs down.
Anyway, the pedal linkage is intact and functioning properly. The clutch cable is intact and still attached at both ends and is functioning properly. The clutch lever on the outside of the transmission is still attached and operates normally. I have very little resistance to the pedal when I push down on it and it stays down unless I pull up on it. The clutch is firmly engaged and since I can still drive the car clutchless I know the transmission still works fine and there's no vibration or noise in the drive train.

I assume there's some kind of clutch linkage that passes through the transmission that has broken or come out of place. Anyone here have a similar problem? What's the fix for it? Don't tell me to take it to the dealer - I actually work on my own cars.
