Hi everyone !! This is my first post on here and I have a few ??s. I plan on getting a used golf or gti in the next month or so and I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two. I test drove an 06 1.8 turbo and it was pretty quick and I'm wondering if the golf have a weeker engine or something because they are priced less than a gti. I'm planning on getting an 03-05 and are there and other issues I should look out for ??
Thanks Dave

first of all welcome
the mk4 (99-05) GTI 1.8T is turbo charged hence the T, the 2.0 golf is naturally aspirated with a slightly bigger motor. not sure about difference in power and all, never been in a golf, but the extra money is in the turbo. 1.8T's are pretty fast stock, but test drive em both if youre wondering.
happy buying

There is also a VR6 GTI with a 2.something 6 cylinder. i think its rated around 200hp stock whereas the 1.8T is 180.

well now, the 99-05 GTI's (mk4 body style (<---like my avatar), right before this newest round one) arent six speed unless youre lookin at an anniversary edition. The regular GTI's and VR6's are 5 speed. I believe the 06 models are 6 speed though... thats the newest body style.

I looked at the new body styles and didn't like them too much. One more question, what kind of mpg do you get with the 1.8t ?

with the older body style you wont find a six speed unless in a 20th anniversary i think. but i agree i like them more as far as looks.
gas mileage isnt bad, i average around 27 mpg all together with 93 octane, but i drive both highway and city. i notice a huge difference if im on it a lot. as soon as the turbo spools the good mileage goes bubye. so if its pedal to the floor constantly, mileage may be crappy. not sure, i usually stay out of it unless in a wicked hurry or im racing. Its a great little car though.
