When I tried to start my 1969 beetle it sounded like a bad battery. Slowly turning but still starting, for about 3 days it did this. Finally now when I turn the key there is not even a sound. The lights still come on and the horn still works. I thought maybe a starter so I changed the starter and still nothing. The ground must be ok because the lights work. I can turn the motor at the fly wheel so the motor is ok. What else could I check?

That's a bit curious. When you spin the engine by hand, is it fairly easy or does it take some effort?
The engine turning slowly generaly points to a weak battery if all else is ok. How does it run once it starts? I assume you can push start it at this point.
