Different years had different types of dimmer switches, the earlier model had a floor mount foot controll switch, The switch would stick and not work, also had a fuse for high beam and a seperate fuse for low beams. Later models had a leaver switch on the steering collum. this switch has a set of contact points to make a complete circut when lifted up, that would intern trip a relay in the dash area close to the speedometer and change the high-low beams, also had the same fuse set up as the earlier model. It wasn't uncommon for the bug to blow both headlights at the same time, and you would only have what was left high or low. The voltage regulator wasn't the greatest in the world and some times would stick and cause a over charge surge and do the damage to the lights. Hope this was some help.
