Hi,

Need to replace the oil pump on my 1.8T AWT engine on my '02 passat as it has starved of oil due to the well know sludge problem.  The manual I have is not clear - does anyone know if I have to remove the cam belt to access the chain that drives the oil pump or can you remove the oil pump without disturbing the cam belt?  Reading other forums, on the older passat engine you could simply unbolt the oil pump but not sure on this 02 model?

Thanks.

I'm new to this site. I had a problem with low oil pressure, did you? I went to several mechanics and they all said oil pump or replace engine. I had sludge too. I was turned on to a mechanic in Norwood ,Ma. Auto Mall Service. He knew right away what the problem was. He said the oil pump never fails. It was the screen in the oil pan. With turbo engines if you don't change oil every 3000 miles your in trouble. What happened to me was, the last owner waited too long. And it needs to be 05-40 oil synthetic. My valves were rattling very loudly. I was fortunate. The backside is to change screen in oil pan and clean sludge out you have too lift engine to get to oil pan screen. It was worth it, $800.00 to repair. Now i'm going to sell car and not buy VW again. Hope this helps.
