Please help. I'm a GM dealership technician and one of the stock vehicles dropped a gear on a test drive and I've been saddled with repair on a flat rate basis with basically no technical information or VW tools available! Wow - that is a long sorrowful sentence! Anyway... 99 Jetta 2.0 A/T No service lights on in the instrument cluster. Reverse ok. Seems to start in 3rd gear with the shifter in D, but has manual low, second, third. Any common problems with this?

If you work at a GM dealer, why don't you have one of them transmission guy's check it out? Probably just the clutch pack.
