well i had a friend who was driving on the interstate going like 70MPH and her car all of a sudden died, well she had it towed to the VW dealer where, without eeven looking at the motor said it was the timing belt.....they called her father and said it would be 4500 to fix.   he ended up selling the car to me, b/c i needed a DD that was reliable.  i just drove about 600miles round trip and towed it back,    so i get it back and pull the tiiming cover, and wala!!!! the belt isn't broke...looks fine also.     so i tried to crank it and it won't even spin. in fact, the starter sounds pretty slow and i don't think it's engaging.     what else could this be????      i thought maybe the batt/alternator went bad on the interstate and caused it to just die, but i dunno.

i figured i'd ask here if anybody had the same troubles.   thanks in advance guys!!!!!

oh yeah it's an 02 jetta 1.8T automatic.

Not saying your wrong at all........ but when a timming
belt breaks, it doesn't break half into.  999 times out of
1000 what happens is a few of the teeth on the belt
strip off  and then the belt pulleys wont turn, and the
cam is out of time with the crank shaft, So go back and
look at the little teeth on the belt and see if you find
some stripped off, if so the belt is broken. Also the valves
stand a good chance of being bent, that will mean an
engine over haul,  GOOD LUCK !!!
