Robaire -> 95 golf 3 weird problem (1/27/2008 2:11:42 PM)

Hi - for the past 4 months my 95 golf 3 has been acting strange off & on when cold starting. It does not do this all the time but about once every 2 weeks: turning the ignition key causes the alarm to go off and I have to get out, close the door, and lock & unlock the door to make it stop. Then, turning the ignition key causes the ignition to start & stop repeatedly until I turn it off. This happens for 2 or 3 tries, then it will start normally and run OK for the next week or 2. A couple of times it did the alarm thing when starting hot. Not doing this all the time makes it hard to determine the cause.
It has an automatic trans and only 110,000 miles on it and I've maintained it well, and it always behaves when I bring it in for this problem. I'm concerned it will die when I least expect it.
Has anyone had a problem like this, or can give me some clues as what to check ??
