I've got a 69 bug with a Weber 32/36dfev carb installed by a VW mechanic. It's been about a year, and I've since started having idle troubles.

Here's what happens:
Start the bug, and it doesn't want to idle, not hot or cold. It does do better when hot, but not good enough for driving.

I have the air filter off, and can see that the choke flaps are all the way open. If I close them down to a bit past half way, it will idle just fine.

Here's what I tried:
I slowly screwed the idle mixture screw almost all the way out while it was running, and it's running didn't change much, if any at all. I then slowly screwed it in as far as the spring would allow, and still no real difference. It did seem to run slightly better all the way out, but we still had to hold the choke over half way closed.

Other info:
This bug has a new electronic distributor and new electric fuel pump with regulator (E8016SM fuel pump from Advanced auto)

Sounds like your Weber has trash in the jets, take it
apart and clean it.

I was thinking jet adjustment or cleaning as well.

I disconnected power from the electronic choke off and it runs much better now. I also took apart the carb, and it looks clean... The idle mixture screw is having more of an effect now, so something's up with the automatic choke. It was connected to the coil's +12 wire, which is a 10 or 12 gauge wire direct from the battery (fused, through a 20A relay).

Someone else mentioned the coil may be going bad and leaking/leaked out all of it's oil. This was based upon it seeming like the bug had less power on hot days...

Any thoughts?

Can't hurt to change the coil if it's old. It's a fairly cheap item to change and will eliminate that as a cause of the problem.
