if you're worried bout a head gasket, take out one spark plug at a time, and do a compression test to be sure. The easiest way to tell is antifreeze in the oil, your oil will be a milky white, or have bubbles. Also, coolant flushes are really good thing to do, especially after the winter, I do mine every spring. Make sure your thermostat is good, in that it's not stuck closed.
