Hi
I have a Golf GL 1800, 1990 and it has recently started to 'over rev'. This tends to happen on two occassions.

1. When the car is first started when cold - revs up to 3000 and remains there for around 10 minutes (until the engine has heated up I guess)

2. When driving on the motorway, say at 80mph, the engine seems to over rev and remains high 3000+ until the car has been driven at slower speeds for some time.

Is there anyone who knows what this problem is please and what I will need to do to get it fixed?

3-speed auto trans, or manual?

It shouldn't rev up to 3000 and stay there for 10 mins...definitely have a problem there. Is it smooth when it over revs or does it chug? VW's that year are very basic setups, so ironically enough, it's hard to say lol...need more info for the diagnosis.

Hi Jeff

Thanks and I'll try and give you a better idea, although my 'engine' knowledge is limited, growing but limited!

It's a manual with 6 gears (1-5 & R) no injection or anythng.

When the car starts from cold it will start pretty much first time every time although if you do not press the accelerator it may cut out if very cold. Once it has 'caught' the revs will steadily increase, no chugging, up to around 3000 and remain there until, and I guess, the engine has warmed, when they drop to around 1000.

Then the second over revving situation occurs when the car has been driven at motorway speeds. The engine will happily rev at 3000 once you leave the motorway - it's a bit like having cruise control permanently at 3000 - you can still drive and only need touch the brake for control (so I guess a little dangerous too). The revs are again constant with no chugging and will gradually lower to the normal 1000 after the car has been either driven at 30-40mph for a while or if the engine is turned off for a while then restarted (at which point they will not rev up to 3000 as in a cold start - they will now be normal at 1000).

The car does however chug when the engine is turned off. Sometimes the engine will continue even once ignition is off and key is out.....

That pretty much sums up the problem....doesn't sound too good to me so I hope you help :)

Thanks again
Ross

Your car stays running after the ignition is off and the key is out?? Whoa if that's the case, that's pretty impresive, but as everyone knows it takes fuel and air for combustion to keep the engine running. I would check the throttle body, housing, and cables. Could be stuck or intermittent throttle stuck open, look around and see if anything is missing or out of place. Find out and get back to me.....
