i just replaced carburetor and fuel pump on my 69 beetle and it will start and run a few seconds but it wont idle.  it has new pilot cut off solenoid hooked up to coil and solenoid clicks when key is turned on.  the carburetor is a new brosol that is the replacement for solex 30 pict 2.  it acts like it runs out of fuel but it will restart upon pumping accelerator.  do i need to adjust carburetor and if so how.  david

I would start with the idle adjustment screw. It's on the left side of the carb on the older Solex carbs and has a spring on it. Find it and screw it all the way in then back it out about 2.5 turns. This should give you a good starting point. Start the car and SLOWLY turn the screw back in counting how many turns you're giving it. When the engine starts to sputter stop and move it back to the 2.5 mark. Do some math and figure out at how many turns from 0 you got the sputtering. From the 2.5 mark back the screw out and listen for the same scenario, the sputtering. Calculate how many turns that is and find the middle of the two sputtering adjustments and set the screw at that point. This will be your best rough estimate. Now it's time to see how it drives and make small adjustments.

There is also a screw pointing to the front of the car that goes through the throttle arm, if that is in or out too far it can screw up the idle. Sorry I didn't think of that earlier!

Any luck?

also on the replacement carburetor is a screw above the fast idle screw that had a tag on it that said   "if you want to use dash pot remove this plug.  what does that mean?  the old carburetor did not have such a device.  david

Agree with all of the above.  Just one more thing :  Make sure you adjust the side screw first (the one with the spring) and the screw facing the front last; and do it with the engine warm, not right after you start it
