My brother and I are going to rebuild his 1969 1600cc motor. My brother has bought a kit from JC witney. We plan to disassemble the motor and use the kit to rebuild it. Does anyone have any advice for us? My only question is with the new main and rod bearings, what is the best way to check clearance? plastic gage? Any tricks we might need to know? thanks little_scottie

Find a reputable VW mechanic. Not a mechanic, an air-cooled VW mechanic. When you split the crankcase open you have to get it "align bored". Basically they machine all the surfaces down again which is why I buy the parts after boring and having it spec'd so that everything fits just right. Another reason for the align bore is because the case has no gasket so the surfaces have to mate up perfectly. Another suggestion is to go "all stock" or "all pro". Either make it stock or completely high performance...you'll have a lot less problems this way.
