Urgent - Inner tie rod end bent on 2004 Jetta

Francis4344 -> Urgent - Inner tie rod end bent on 2004 Jetta (3/29/2008 6:51:39 AM)

The snow removal has been dismal this year...

Last night, my son sort of "banged up" the front end because the wheels fell into some deep ice ruts...

He bent both the inner and outer tie rod end. I will post a picture later.

Anyone ever changed an inner tie rod end? Whats involved?

Thanks

It's a dealership item has to be ordered.  Looking at about $800 for the tie rods.  I payed about that for parts and labor.

Hmm, just bought a jobber part for 90$. Don't intend on paying the dealer to do it...

I didn't have the dealer do it, it was a place called Les Schwab, alignment shop and tire shop.  Brand new parts have to be ordered, I will not use any used part on my steering.  I will not gamble on that especially if my kids are in the car.  I always get brand new parts, you don't have to worry if they're gonna fail on you.

By jobber, I meant NEW but not from the delaer. The original one were TRW, this is a no name brand made in GERMANY.

If your paid 800$ for tie-rods you got ripped of big time.

By the way, It was a piece of cake. I would have finish under an hour, but a minor slip up cause me to damage the cheap PLASTIC boot that covers it. I will have to wait till monday to get a new one.

yeah i was gonna say tie-rods aren't bad, just need to count the turns when you remove it and put the new one on the same amount of turns, not a bad idea for an alignment though

The place ordered the parts, plus labor, and an alignment for $400, I looked at my bank account cause it seemed high after I posted it.  So anyways I got everything done, alignment and all the work for almost $400, plus they fixed another problem I was having while it was apart.  Not bad at all for that.
