ok i have a 99.5 jetta with a 2.0....i just bought it and boy do i love it but the speedo is giving me a problem....the speedo completely quit and the odometer stopped too...i changed the vss and still no luck but the weird thing is.....we took the old vss and hooked a drill to it hooked it up to the speedo and spun the shaft and the speedo worked ....we even pulled out the shaft that goes into the tranny with the splines on it and spun it and it worked but after putting it all back together there is still a problem with the speedo.....could this mean that the gear that spins the little shaft that goes into the tranny is stripped or what...or maybe a short ....wont work unless i hook a drill onto it ....i just subscribed here so if you could leave me a reply or an email......my email is xzacattakx@yahoo.com if you can help me please do cuz its all i need to drive it....thank you

sounds like an electrical problem of some sort.  If the speedo isn't working, then there may be a short somewhere in the harness.  How long has that been installed??  Check the connection where the wires hook to the dash, see if they're frayed.  Maybe a chaffed wire somewhere at the other end.  All fuses are good?  Not sure beyond that...
