Hey everybody. I am in need of a new car and am looking to spend 12000 on a new used car. I have always loved the looks of the Passats and I have been looking at an '02 or '03 Passat GLX with 4motion. I live in Wisconsin so thats why I feel I should get the AWD. I know in the next year or two I'll be going away to grad school most likely far away so I need to know if this car will be reliable and fairly maintenance free as I rack up the miles. Most cars in my price range start with 80,000-90,000 miles already on them so I need to know how the car would be from the 100,000-200,000 mile area. If you could give me any feedback on what I may be getting myself into if I got a Passat would be VERY appreciated, Thank you.

go with the v6
check to see if the timing belt was replaced
the timing chain tensoners like to leak oil
front end seems to have some problems (tie rod ends recalled)
controll arms go out. not to expensive

yeah I was wanting a v6 as is, so if the timing belt was replaced I am in the clear for the leaking oil? Overall though you think the passat would be a good investment? Please be honest about any concerns and if you have a suggestion for maybe a different car you think would slightly out do the passat in the reliability category. I am a 6'4" guy so I dont want a small car like a honda or toyota.

they dont change the chain ten. seal when they do a belt
you will smell oil if the pasenger side is leaking it drips on the converter
the drivers side leaks down on the ac compressor and the pan
they are fairly good cars i wirk on them often
the 1.8 is a lot more prone to problems

well do you know of any other midsize cars that youd recommend over a passat? I know I looked a little at Audi's but they are pretty similar. I just want to know my money isnt going to dig me a whole by buying a passat and finding out I'll have to put a bunch more money into it as the miles build up.

would you say the Passat would be a better investment then any of the american cars? I know Honda and Toyota cars are hard to beat and all but i just know I need better then the last couple american made cars I've had.

What was your price range?  Passats are pretty good, my friend has had one for awhile and besides the regular maintenance he hasn't had any problems.  I really like the Audi's, like the S4 twin turbo..o yea!  BMW isn't too bad either, I;d love to have the 325CI....sport package..heck yea!!  Anyways, I know some pretty good American cars...I had a mustang that lasted awhile.  Honda's are really cheap and good on gas that's why everyone wants one, I think.
