1990Jetta1.6Ldiesel -> gas engine out, diesel in (4/24/2008 2:51:46 PM)

I have a 1990 Jetta diesel engine and a tranny from a 5 speed manual.  I want to put it in a 1991 Golf with an automatic tranny.  Is this possible without major modifications to go from manual to automatic? What do I need to do to make this work, or would it be easier to just look for a VW with a manual tranny? Or can the diesel engine go on the gasoline atx tranny?
Also, I have heard that the MK2 Vw's were made from 1985 to 1992, can anyone confirm this is true?

I dont know the full extent but I did a complete swap on an eclipse before. If the body is stamped for either setup it will be easier. I would look on the firewall for a possible cutout point for a clutch master, also look under by the pedals and see if there is a spot for a clutch pedal.

All I had to do was cut those said holes and the shifter mounted right up to the body with no mods, had a cable linkage so it was easier. Also had to get a different ecu. But like I said this was done on an eclipse...
