Hi
I've got a 92 1800 8V Golf Gti, it's only my 2nd car (I'm 33) after my
1600 air cooled panelvan bus.
I've had it or shall I say thrashed it for years, it's got 312 000 km's
on the clock, never had a rebuild, never been open etc. It's had this
problem since the day I got it but got progressively worse so I'm
thinking cracked solder joint or cracked PCB or something. What happens
is, the rev counter needle drops off suddenly and randomly, along with
this the computer resets the display(doesn't reset the figures) and the
oil light and water light flash.
This all happens at the same time. Occasionally it will work for a trip
or even a whole day and I can access all the trip info etc on the
display and see my revs and then those LED's flash, the tacho dies and
the display only tells me what time it is and will not let me scroll
through the options.
I hope you can help me out with this, trouble is, we lack the enthusiasts and
specialists here in dark africa.

sounds like a wiring problem maybe, is there any codes you could look up?  I really don't know, sorry.
