hi all, i'm having this problem with a 1987 1.6 golf. intermitently, 1, looses all power, the gas feels throaty and has no power. 2. making a bad sound as well 3. car holds back after driving for say and hour. 4. sometimes have to floor it for the revs to come through there is slight cream sludge on the rocker cover cap. any help greatly appreciated, thanks James

That cream sludge is air bubbles in the oil, why? I think you have a pooched gasket which may be causing a leak...replace that gasket and see what happens. Check all other vaccum lines and make sure you don't have any other leaks... -Jeff

i had a 86 golf that used to do the exact same thing. the dealer finally changed the cpmputer chip (i don't know exactly which one) and that finally soved the problem. My 99 golf now does the same thing but you don''t have to drive the hour, and there is no computer chip to change. don't know if that helps or not.

i would say check the vaccum lines, my 96 had lost horsepower due to a bad vacumhose
