any tricks to priming the oil pump on the 1.8 L after an overhaul?

You could always pull your plug wires and crank the motor over a few times, I know you could score the cylinders doing this, but if you pour fresh oil down the hatch and then crank it a few times it should come alive, otherwise soak the pump in some oil. Anyone got a less risky method?
