I have a 73 Beetle and the fuel gauge just started acting irratic. It will show the fuel level and then go to Empty and then back again to proper reading. I have checked the wire connections. Can anyone give me an idea what is going on. It has worked fine until yesterday. Thanks

check the nuts on the back of the guage that hold the wire spades to the guage you might need to take the resistor off to get to the one under it
they like to loosen up

Just got done going through my whole fuel system to get my 69 bug running for the first time in 20 years.  If you don''t happen to find any loose connections, you could try pulling the sending unit out of the top of the tank and slowly exercise the float up and down.  Watching the gauge as it moves.  If during any time during the movement, the gauge acts erraticaly, Replace the sending unit.  I think they run about 30 bucks if you find it''s the problem.  Good luck.
