Hi,
I just bought a 2001 1.8T Wolfsburg and it didn''t come with a owners manuel, and I was wondering if using synthetic oil was mandatory, recommended or what? Thanks!

I would definitely use synthetic.  I use Mobil 1 10W-40.  Just make sure it''s 40 weight whatever you use.

aren''t there some oils that are like full synthetic and half syntec??  I use valvoline for engines for like 100,000 miles or whatever but I''ve always questioned what oil to use, too.

I''ve found that synthetics never produce any sludge and even clean sludge build up.  I bought my car with about 75,000 miles on it and immediately started using Mobil 1.  At about 110,000 I changed the valve cover gasket and was taken back because everything looked brand new.  A couple of months later I flushed the engine and removed the oil pan to clean it and there was nothing to clean.  As far as synthetic blends are concerned I''m scared of them.  I flushed the engine on my Dad''s Harley and he had been using a blend for about a year.  There was literally a little less than an inch of sludge in the oil pan.  The 10W-40 Mobil 1 is for engines with 75,000+ on them.  10W-40 provides good year round protection.  From what I''ve read you could use 15W-50 in the summer and 5W-40 in the winter.  Even though VW uses 5W-40 I just feel the 5W-40 is way too thin and the 10W-40 provides better protection.  I would however feel comfortable using the 5W-40 in the winter.  This is just me talkin'' though.

That''s what I would do.  Hold on to your hat though, it''s 7 bucks a quart but I definitely think it''s worth it.  I change mine every 4,000 miles but you could go as many as 7,000 if you wanted to.
