Last week my shifter would not engage gears properly. I have a 2k Jetta GLS 2.0L five speed manual. It started with second and fourth gears, but when I got halfway home after work, none of the gears would engage, including reverse. It feels like there are no gear slots (for lack of a better term). I can spin the shifter in a funnel motion. Is there a guider plate under the console that might have slipped out of place or does this mean my transmission bit it?

i would agree with the guy above.

if it is just the plate then you could go from 1st to 3rd just not have the glide to it...

I would check the shift ball in the trans linkage, & check for broken bracket that guides shift rod, and buy shift kit to replace worn plastic parts , this is a big item with these trans.
If you wait too long parts will be worn prematurely
