86 GTI man -> RE: PERSONAL INFORMATION (12/2/2007 11:21:44 PM)

I have had three Golfs a Passat and a Super Beetle, I am now purchasing a 86 GTI, I am a mechanic so the little work it needs will be easy enough. I am looking to learn more about this car and the tricks to make it go a little faster. Have a great one.

Thanks to those who contribute to this page! I have found answers to several problems I have had with my 2 Jettas.
VW has been my car of choice more than any other brand. I have been driving for 44 years and owned many cars.
Here are the VW's I have owned.
1954 beetle
1966 beetle
2 1967 beetles (one new and one used many years later)
1970 beetle
1998 Jetta GT
1999 Jetta Wolfsburg.
My favorite was the '67 but today my '98 Jetta GT is tops. 132K and running strong. Took it on a trip through the southwest and up into Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. 3500 miles no problems and averaged 35-39MPG on 85 octane gas and this was at 75-80 MPG. Go Little Red!

I recently went to the international auto show in San Francisco and other than being amazed at all the froo froo stuff on the new cars I was shocked at the gas mileage the new cars get now. The new VW Jettas and other models of the VW line get LESS mpg than my 10 year old Jetta!! Progress takes a giant leap backwards.

Hi, I'm new to the site. I currently own a 2000 New Beetle 2.0 5 spd manual, and my dad owns a 1995 (mk3) Passat Wagon TDI. We've also previously owned a mk2 Golf and a mk3 Jetta. My dad also used to work for a VW dealership in Toronto as a mechanice. Ive grown up on VW my whole life.

jackelmann -> RE: PERSONAL INFORMATION (4/14/2008 5:44:24 PM)

sooo.. I just purchased VW #3 tonight..  Started with a 1987 Jetta (best car I ever owned and I was not smart to trade it in with 94K in 2001).. then I went to a 2001 Beetle GLS automatic (I get sick of all of the bad posts about those cars.. I drove mine almost to 100k with NO problems..probably didn't quite maintain it properly and never put a dime into the thing)... I totalled the Beetle about three weeks ago.. I just bought a 1999 Jetta GLS..Loaded.. 117K.  The car drove better than my Beetle ever did on test drive.

Funny thing is.. EVERYONE complains about the power windows in this car.. and yes..even off the lot mine was making a wicked noise on the passenger side.  It went up and down, but it wasn't happy about it.  Needless to say, it'll be fixed.

I tried to look into other makes of cars... oh yes, the reliability of Toyota's and Honda's.. but they'll never drive the same.  I'll deal with VW's quirks..  I'd be ashamed to not drive a Volkswagen.

New to forum. Glad to be here. Currently own a 2000 Passat GLX V6 wagon. It's loaded! Have some problems though. I use to have a 2001 New Beetle GLS 2.0. My wife and I loved that car but kids came and not enough room. I really wanted a Eurovan but my wife won't drive one. Well, happy to be here and hope I can get some info on my car.
