My son's 94 Golf 2.0L automatic has a temperature and speed related performance problem. When hot and at highway speed it sometimes bucks and almost stalls when declerating below 45mph.(like in a traffic slow down). I haven't had it happen to me, but he describes it as the car "not being in the right gear". The "check engine" light comes on and the engine starts to buck. He has to floor it to keep it running. It seems only to happen after being on the highway for 1/2+ hour.

It seems to run great except for this condition. Anyone experience similar problems? Could it be the torque converter is staying locked up?

Thanks,

phil

Ken,
Thanks for the reply.
I had the dealer run diagnostics and they said it was the Mass Flow Sensor. They were able to get it to happen by letting it idle in the parking lot for 15-20 minutes. It seems to make sense that it only happens when the under hood temp is high. They quoted me $550 for the part. I'm trying to find it for less and will install it myself. I just would like to know that that's what it is before spending that kind of money on this car. I only need it to last him through the summer.

I changed the MAF sensor and so far it has been good, although we haven't had any hot weather since I changed it.
