Recently purchased a 2002 Volkswagen golf TDI need to remove the gear knob to change the leather gaitor but i am having major problems. Can anyone help me?

there is three main tyoes of gear nobs...

1) screw on
2) slide on with set screws (side screws that hold it on to the shift pole)
3) key (at the bottom there will be a snap key thing just pop that out)

if i remeber right it is a screw on type... so twist it around VERY HARD... if not (if you dont need it any more) tap/hit the top of it with a hammer and it will losen it up easly but could break it.
