I've been discussing this with a few friends of mine and they don't think it would work, but I'm going to ask it here and hope it's the right place to ask. I just purchased a 1986 Volkswagen Jetta and the original paint is peeling off, one side of the car is grey the rest is smokey blue. I was thinking of buying a few spraypaint cans and spray painting the car black (covering windows, handles, etc of course) and putting a few coats of black spraypaint on the car. Would this look bad? or would it work at all for that matter? Any input would be very much appreciated

I wouldn't do that, not the best thing to do. That type of paint tends to run, and it looks like crap. You will never be able to wax it, nor will it look glossy, just flat. I wouldn't do it, but it's your car.

agreed, unless you can find a paint gun and someone who knows how to use it.
Maaco is cheap, look into it.

The paint that's inside the spray can isn't a good paint to use on car. I've seen people do it, but it looks like crap. It'd be no more useful than going to home depot or lowes, or a paint store and buying a can of paint for a house and putting into a spray gun. There's a certain type of paint you use, can't member what it's called. Plus, the big thing is if there's scratches or dents on your car, they show up real bad, cause you gotta bondo and stuff like that. Sanding, wet sanding, primer, paint, wet sand, paint...it's a long process just to get it right. But as I said, it's your car. Maaco is cheap, I've had crap jobs come out of Maaco, but everyone's different.

Alright, I'll take the advice and not do it..now I have to look into maaco because I also heard it was cheap there. How much roughly would it cost? I'll take a look on the website to see if there's any pricing I can find. Oh thank you guys for the replies by the way.

If you know anyone in the body work business, may be able to hook you up. Or if you know anyone that can do it, just buy the paint, def save you money. Hope it all works out for you, let us know what happens.
