I just bought a 2002 Jetta GL. Can anyone tell me where do I check the transmission oil?

I know that it's front wheel drive but I don't know much about how the transaxle works. I've order an owners manual but have not found anything online that shows how to do so.

If I remember right, above the drain plug, should another plug, undo that and you stick your finger in there and see what color it is, and how much you have. I've done it that way on other trans, but not sure if it was auto, may have been a manual, sorry can't remember. Most of the time, I've seen dipstix that are really short, so it's not confused with the oil dipstick. Look for a dipstick that goes down into the trans, otherwise I'm not really sure.

Ive seen some with dipsticks and some (like bagel said) that you have to pull out the plug and stick your finger in to feel the level. not sure on these cars though.

yeah, it should have a dip stick, usually its manuals that you need remove a plug and check for gear lube.

check your owners manual or check around online for shop manuals or something

As you are facing the car, look down at the transmission just behind the starter, you can barely see the fill tube. If you get under the car and remove the four screws holding the plastic cover under the tranny you can see the entire tube. It will have a red cap and once removed there is a plug that may be removed to add fluid. The tranny is a "sealed unit that should not require any additional fluid. Checking the fluid level is achieved by starting the car and putting in gear (not sure which gear off the top of my head). remove the drain plug and fill untill fluid runs out...replace plug.

There is no dipstick

If your car is an automatic!

I would like to know if a vw mk3 manual transmission, would fit my jetta mk4, since my auto trans got broken and is very hard to find out the replacement part. So i am seriously thinking in make it manual.

lol. easier, cheaper, and quicker to buy a whole new mk3, or even mk4 if you find a good deal...

nah with the right know how it can be done for cheap if the labor is done by you, I would think the body was stamped for both versions. Anyone?

p.s. I did a tranny conversion on my eclipse for less than 1500. a new auto tranny would be more than a third of that. Makes sense to me....
