Hi:

Not had a VW since my 1963 bus! Now I'm fortunate to be back with a 2004 Passat Wagon 1.8T. It only has 9K miles on it but I wanted to get off to the right start and do a fresh oil change. In looking around, I saw a number of web sites that tried to make me nervous about sludge in the 1.8T engine! I hadn't seen anyting on this and in fact seen more on 200K plus milage cars, etc. This does have me a little concerned and all the more reason for me to start my regimine this weekend. So here is the question.

I was going to use Castrol Syntec 10W40. I see that is "approved by the VW website under their 502 00 standard. I also picked up a K&N filter #2005 to use for the change. I figured that I couldn't do any better than that. (I use k&N in my other turbo -92 Capri). When I went to take a look to do the change, I noticed that the K&N was about the same lenght, but a smaller diamater. I stopped dead in my tracks as the VW dealer wasn't open today and if I needed to run there for a "factory" filter I'd have been out of luck. What do you folks on the forum know about this? Any information would be appreciated, I actually would like to complete the oil change this weekend if possible.

Oh - I should also mention that we do have the VW extended warranty so I don't want anything to provide them with an opportunity way down the road to go - oh yea, that would have been under warranty but...

Thanks Again. LJ

I too purchased a NEW 2004 Jetta Diesel Wagon last year and ran into the same problem as you did! I did some research on oil filters and found out MOST of THEM are junk excpept Mobil 1's premium filter for about $9.00. I would only use the original replacement fron the dealer seeing you have an extended warranty. The extra few bucks would give you coverage incase something does happen and they try and not cover it because of something stupid like that! I went with Mann filters but I have 45,000 on my car and the extended warranty doesn't come into play for me. Good Luck! But I would be using Mobil 1 synthetic instead.
