82 Diesel Rabbit - Delete the A/C Compressor?

Help... I'm doing some repairs on my son's Diesel 82 Rabbit. The AC compressor housing is cracked in several places and won't hold proper tension to drive the alternator, which incidentally needs replacing. I need to permanently remove the AC compressor and fit a non-AC style alternator. Can anybody tell me what's entailed in this? A new mounting bracket for the alternator? Any help much appreciated.

I did this once, let me see. This was on gas rabbit so it's probably a little different but it might give you some ideas.

1. gutted the old AC and bracket.

2. used an abrasive disk in a circular saw to lop off a bunch of the bracket that was just in the way and cleaned up the edges and corners on the grinding wheel and painted it.

3. put the main bracket back on (new water pump while it was all apart too).

4. slapped some of the old pieces together into a tensioner system. Note that the upper arm is touching the main bracket for leverage, got lucky :).

5. bought a fan belt of the appropriate length.

I apparently had the main pully off also, I think I did the timing belt while I was there.
