Hey guys and gals,

THIS IS A CHEAP BUT EFFECTIVE MOD
for all you mk4s

i was checking out vwvortex the other day and found an great source for researching modifications on there. Anyway, i found one called the stock airbox cold air intake, and it caught my interest being as im weary of cold air intakes with cone filters sitting in the engine bay or down near the bumper to get extra dirty and possibly wet. So i checked this out and had thought of doing something similar to it a while back but never pursued until now. Im definitely glad i did so, though it was a major PITA to get the stock air passage pieces out, once done the rest was cake.
The difference in throttle response is irrefutable, though i dont want to lie and claim more power, id rather call it faster and better access to more of the power this car has. No lie when i test drove it after completion, i couldnt get any traction, its like a different car when you first feel the difference.
I totally back this mod 100% and if you look at the stock air passage youll understand why it works.
(noted: i do have a k&N panel filter in the car as well as this new piping that may add to the effect)

Im sure it could, it was so simple and it made a great difference.
Youre more brave than i, bagel, i would never rock a cold air in the snow, im in Dallas, Texas, in the least snowy, very little rain, not even dusty part of the state and i still wont do it. I dont want all that gettin in and i dont know exaclty how easy it is to screw up a motor with a cold air, but i know a guy that used to have an eclipse with a cold air down low and somehow he sucked in enough water to hydro-lock his motor. not sure if it was a puddle or what but since then ive been weary.
not to mention if the cone filter is in the engine bay, its not particularly pullin cold air, its probably pullin warm air unless you have it down by the bumper, thus closer to the elements. I had a cone in the engine bay on my minitruck before i bought the v-dub and that thing was always nasty... couldnt keep it clean at all
I really liked this setup because it still utilized an enclosed filter.

Yea I looked over the instructions and it doesn't seem that hard. You have the turbo, I don't, so we shall see what kind of HP difference I get, cause what it looks like is almost a ram air mod, instead of having a true cold air intake. Does it matter what type of tubing you use for the piping down by the bumper?? I could prolly get some add on house to the cold air pipe I already have and mod it that way. THEN I would def have a TRUE cold air/ram air!!..

yeah, thats exactly what it is, ram air, cold air? same difference, cept people claim cold air when a lot of the time it isnt really pullin cold. as far as i see it a true cold air has to pull from the outside, so basically the exact same as a ram air in my opinion.
i used aluminum tubing, cause i couldnt find any 3 inch plastic at homedepot or lowes. doesnt matter much i wouldnt think. but the aluminum seems to be more flexible.
good luck bud, let me know how that works for you

Hey I know this is an old one but Joelzy, your runnin a 1.8L right. just wondering and if so is your stock air box on the driver/passenger side. I'm kinda thinking about fabricating a switching valve so I could keep the stock air box setup for winter and the custom one for summer.

yeah 1.8T, its on the drivers side, cool idea man, but if you do a custom one right, i dont think you'll need to go back stock for winter

I have done something like that before. I cut the bottom of my box off and ran a K/N and WOW that made a huge diff with the amount of air I was getting. The sound was nice also.
