over heating fuel pump question

I got an 01 Jetta 1.8T and the car stopped running 1 day so I had it towed to the dealer and they looked at it and can up w/ the problem that the fuel pump overheated. My question is if the pump overheated how comes my wife can drive it everday to work which round trip is around 10 miles. When the problem occurred I drove to school and home around 113 miles then to my parents and it would start when I went to leave. I thought the reason the wife isn't having a problem is cause it don't get hot enough any help would be greatful.

how in da hell can ya fuel pump overheat when its ridin in cooler than ambeient fuel,[&:] im a service tech and thats the biggest load i ever heard[:(].did youask the dealer to give u the old part back ,that assuming you have changed the part .also askthe tech how did he come to this conclusion[&:] .

only thing ive heard near that was fuel pumps going out from running the car out or close to out of gas. I suppose because it would be running dry

fuel pumps burn up because of electrical problems not  mechanical[:(]

your sooo close, electric fuel pumps can get hot and stop, I've been a service tech for 24 years, I've seen it alot. usually, as in 99 % of the time, the fuel FILTER was never changed and the pump is pumping its heart out to get fuel through it, these pumps are capable of 120 psi when dead headed!! but not for very long, they get hot and die electrically from the strain. Usually the conclusion is drawn from the customers complaint of how the vehicle stalled, and the noise a pump makes when its going bad. I personally don't say the pump got hot, I say the fuel pump is no good, but remember.... Service Advisers are NOT technicians, and they confuse the storys ALOT!! It happens to me everyday... Hope this helps

enough of this monkee shit...listen to the mechanic...he's right ...pumps die because they are running dry  and usually the main pump dies because the transfer tank pump is not pushing fuel into the fuel box(where the main pump is located)...you run the risk of losing both pumps because they work together and almost never work alone for very long...before they blow! you need to cjeck relays and fuses...and you may have to replace both pumps( junk yrd...best cheapest bet....or new and never worry about used but the result.....big hole in your wallet)
