GOING CRAZY AND BROKE WITH CHECK ENGINE LITE COMING ON.
IT SEEMS LIKE AFTER TRIPS OF 250 MI OR MORE WE ENCOUNTER THE CHECK ENGINE LITE AT SOME POINT OF THE TRIP. IT'S BEEN DIAGNOSED AS O2 senor, cracked vacuum line, loose gas cap, don't know, and several more I DON'T HAVE THE PAPERWORK ON ANYMORE.
WE ALSO HAVE TO KEEP CLOSE TABS ON OIL LEVEL, SEEMS TO CONSUME OIL ON THESE RELATIVELY LONG TRIPS. ANYONE HAVE SIMILAR POBLEMS OR HISTORY? THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT USED AT 54K, NOW HAS 71K.

Have to keep an eye on my 2002 Beetle for oil consumption. I never knew that this was going on till I went to get the oil changed and when service center called me out to the garage to see for my own eyes that there was NO oil on the stick!!! I was stunned!

As for sensors, mine has been in the shop 3 or 4 times for this. Mine was for the engine coil. They (Volkswagan dealership) couldn't get the Service Engine Soon light to go off so now it is belived that there was never an engine coil problem to begin with. 3 coils later. They eventually replaced the computer (at VW's expense) and I have not had a problem since. My friend at work has a 2001 and hers just got out of the shop to replace 2 sensors, headlight and wiring harness. $585.00. I've heard from various people that the VW Beetle is known for all of the sensor issues. But...what are you to do? I still owe the bank!!

Good Luck
