I just bought a golf from a guy on Craig's list for very cheap, but I do not know what generation of golf it is (i.e. III, or IV) but it is a 1998, and he said something about it being the later 1998 model, or the 1998.5 model if there is such a thing. If there is some way for me to find out by looking at it, or if there is something on the title that tells me, let me know. Under the model it says GG. Please help, because I am finding that there are certain parts that can go on one model and not the other, so I do not want to buy parts I cannot use. Thanks!

ive heard in 98 they made both models, mk4 being the one to carry on afterwards to 2005, but ive seen the mk3 go till 99 and the mk4 start in 98 on different sites, so its hard to say,
my original impression was that the mk3 ended mid 99, and the mk4 was from 99.5 to 2005, but i dont know. maybe someone else knows.

here is a picture of the mk3, noticable differences are mostly headlights, taillights, and overall shape.

im pretty sure the mk4 started in 1999.5 because i had a 1999 Wolfsburg Jetta and it was mk3 for sure.
