Help! My factory VW AM/FM cassette radio quit in my Jetta. It powers on (you can see FM stations digitally), but no volume, no static, no nothing. My brother removed the entire unit to try and repair it, but it's now locked up and it's requesting the "security code" to unlock it.

As I believe it is not worth sinking money into fixing it, I found (2) compatible replacements on Ebay (original factory units) within the $10-$30 range. However, since they were removed, each Seller doesn't have the security code, but told me if I purchased the unit, they would supply me with the VIN#. I'm not so sure about this arrangement.

After calling my local VW dealer, I am told it would be $95/hour to research the security code to unlock my (potentially) BROKEN radio, and they cannot even guaranted success in obtaining the code (so why pay them if they fail, right??). Most importantly, I cannot install a '95 factory AM/FM cassette player from ANOTHER '95 Jetta. There is nothing that would prove to them the unit was not stolen....not even the VIN# (junked or not). Not even a contract of sale would work. It's mainly something about the security code programming in MY Jetta that will not be compatible with another factory unit out of ANOTHER Jetta. Wow! This is unbelievable.

HOWEVER, according to the dealer, I could purchase a used or after-market unit and installation would not interfere with the security code programming. Well, I'm completely confused! Can anyone help? I am on a very limited budget! Tnanks so much for any information.

Your dealer is not being candid. I have called mine several times to get a code. Tell them you accidentally removed the fuse for the radio and need the code to reset. Be sure to have the VIN of the original vehicle and the serial number from the radio. The serial number is the one with the barcode that starts with "VWZ" and should be about 14 characters long.

I've got a radio from a 96 Jetta in my 97 Passat. I got it on eBay for about $30. Sure beats the $281 pricetag from the dealer (plus $490 for radio core) ...
