The CEL in my 1997 Jetta was ON last weekend.  How can I retrieve the fault code ?  Where is the diagnostics port to retrieve the code and what kind of scanner do I need to do so ?

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

i encountered this problem 2 weeks ago. take out your ash tray and slide the plastic cover that is just to the right back towards the opening the ash tray came out of there should be a 16 pin plug there- OBD II. i have a 97 jetta gls and that is where i found it.

i used a buddy of mines scanner, SNAP ON modis and it was actually the software of the scanner that told us where to find the diagnostic port. according to the scanner the fault was evaporative emmissions leak detected- motor control. we cleared but it returned two days later. vw dealer says my "N80" canister needs to be replaced at a charge of $300 so who knows. yeah bagel i wondered the same thing cause i friggin searched for an hour under that damn dash looking for a diagnostic port until the scanner clued us in. hope this is of help to you.

Try some of the auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc), many of them will do a free scan of the OBDll system. In addition you can Google "Automobile Scaners" or check ebay for code scanners or OBD ll scanners. My son gave me one that cost about $120 and it has come in handy several times on my 2000 TDI and my grand daughter's 2000 Jetta GLS. The local dealer wants $65 just to do a scan and clear the codes, not to mention the cost of parts and installation which is often as simple as unplugging a defective part and plugging in the new one. Hope this gives you some ideas.

I have a problem with my '01 jetta VR6 engine light. I have replaced the ECU and the Camshaft positioning sensor in hopes of making the light turn off but no luck, and the OBD code reads P0340 which says it should be my cam positioning sensor. I dunno why it wont turn off if ive replaced the whole part. Not sure what do anymore

My check engine light come on and off. Ive had the codes read and they say its somthing to do with my cruise control, but that works fine. I just replace my muffler and most of the piping going back and that made the light go off and stay off. that was 2-3 wks ago and  i havent seen it on since. before that it was on almost everyday for a yr and a half.
