Dashboard Symbols

I have recently bought a used Golf GT TDi V Reg (Jan 2000). The owners guide is not specific to the TDi so i cannot work out some symbols that have now appeared. On the miles per gallon display a circle with a line diagonally though has appeared in the top left corner and in the top right corner a square with "1" in it is displayed. Can anyone tell me what they mean?

If I'm not mistaken the circle w/ the line is the symbol for the "mean" or average of your gas mileage, and the square w/ the number 1 is your trip setting. I dont know exactly how it is on your ride, but my mk iv ( gasoline model) has a button on the bottom of the windshield wiper arm that switches it from 1= short trip, to 2=long trip readings.
